Venue:
Blythswood Hall, Renfield St Stephen's Centre, 260 Bath St, Glasgow, G2 4JP
Starts:
07:00pm
Ends:
08:30pm

The Electoral Reform Society Scotland is hosting a public discussion to cooincide with the release of our new report - 'One Party To Rule Them All: Does Scotland Have A Predominant-Party Problem?'.

The report discusses the prospect of a predominant-party system in Scotland, as the SNP appears on course to win a second majority in the Scottish Parliament election on May 5th and following a history of Labour dominance. In it, we explore the development of party-predominance as the “default setting” of modern Scottish political culture from the 1970s to the present, examining the risks this poses to Scottish democracy and how such risks can be counteracted through Scotland’s political culture and institutions.

Speakers include:
Lesley Riddoch (journalist and commentator)
Angela Haggerty (editor of CommonSpace)
Rory Scothorne (ERS Scotland)

Compered by Gerry Hassan (writer and academic)

The event runs from 7pm - 8.30pm on Wed 20 April.

The venue is Blythswood Hall, Renfield St Stephen's Centre, 260 Bath St, Glasgow, G2 4JP

This is a free event but to help us get an idea of numbers, please reserve your ticket on Eventbrite. There will be refreshments provided.

Event:

Achieving Democracy Max

Venue:
Resturant, Royal George Hotel, SNP Conference, Perth
Starts:
12:30pm
Ends:
01:30pm

Speakers: Rob Gibson MSP, Councillor Alison Thewliss, Natalie McGarry (Women for Independence), Angus Hardie (Scottish Community Alliance) & Willie Sullivan (ERS Scotland)

Published in August 2013, the Democracy Max vision for a good Scottish democracy has at its heart an urgent desire to return power to the people, to give effect to the Claim of Right and ensure participation in politics is accessible, rewarding and universal.

With a tradition of democracy that has seen us pioneer proportional voting systems, but persistent low turnout in elections, should we be thinking about using different democratic engagement methods to ensure the full participation of all Scots in the forthcoming political debate?

From re-invigorating local democracy, to citizens’ assemblies, and delivering constitutional clarity – ERS Scotland believe it’s time that we think differently about democracy and how we do politics – join us to hear more, including examples of strengthening local democracy from the Scottish Community Alliance.
