Democracy Workshop: The 2011 Irish General Election

Venue:
Lakeman Library, 6 Chancel Street, London SE1 OUX
Starts:
01:00pm
Ends:
02:30pm
Invite: Democracy Workshop - The 2011 Irish General Election

Speaker:  Professor Michael Marsh of Trinity College Dublin
Chair:  Michael Steed, McDougall Trust
Venue:  Lakeman Library, 6 Chancel Street, London SE1 OUX [Google Maps]

In February the Irish voters went to the polls and threw out a government.  Voters armed with the Single Transferable Vote form of Proportional Representation dealt a hammer blow to the ruling Fianna Fáil and their Green coalition partners.

It was a remarkable election – which saw Fine Gael emerge as the Republic’s largest party for the first time in its history, and other opposition parties and independent candidates gain unprecedented levels of support.

Now you can hear Professor Michael Marsh talk through the issues, the role of parties, candidates and how voters used the system to change Irish politics.
