The Electoral Reform Society has offered its congratulations to Plaid Cymru, following the Welsh nationalists’ manifesto commitment to Proportional Representation by STV. Meanwhile Welsh Labour continue to set their face against the same voting reforms introduced by their Scottish colleagues – a fair and representative electoral system for local government. Two weeks after Northern Irish voters went to the polls to elect a new Assembly, the Electoral Reform Society (ERS) has published a briefing on how the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system performed. Findings include a highly proportional result, a fall in the number of spoilt ballots and enthusiasm for the voting system from voters.

The Electoral Reform Society has reacted with pleasure to tonight’s momentous vote on Lords Reform. The vote saw MPs vote decisively for a fully elected second chamber. Ken Ritchie, Chief Executive of the Electoral Reform Society said: “Tonight we can celebrate a real breakthrough – and we must congratulate the democrats on all sides of the House who have got us to this stage in the process.”

In her case for reform of the party funding system, Hazel Blears misses the elephant in the room (A hotline to workers, February 27). It is our distorted electoral system that has given rise to the party funding regime that she finds so distasteful.
