Ed Miliband is right about lowering the voting age to 16. If we want young people to respect political institutions, they need a stake in them too.

The Electoral Reform Society welcomed the first glimpse of Gordon Brown’s package of constitutional reforms. The ‘road map’ includes sweeping changes to the operation of the royal prerogative and the right to protest, but does not yet offer any specific commitments to overhaul our outdated elections.

As Secretary of State for Justice Jack Straw finalises the details of Gordon Brown’s long awaited constitutional settlement, the Electoral Reform Society has led calls for genuine democratic reform in proposals expected later this week.
