The future of Welsh democracy? Interviews with Welsh leadership candidates

In just a few week’s time Wales will have its next First Minister in place, with a three way race currently being fought by Mark Drakeford, Vaughan Gething and Eluned Morgan.

In all the coverage of the campaigns there’s been very little about their views on democracy and where they stand on electoral reform. Yet, this leadership election takes place in the context of a critical time for democracy. There are two Bills set to be tabled next year on democratic reform; a local government bill that will see Votes at 16 for local elections, alongside other reforms to local government. In addition AMs recently voted to introduce a Bill next year which will legislate on Votes at 16 for Assembly elections.

All of this takes place in the context of Brexit, demands for better campaign regulation and the year of the centenary of some women getting the vote.

So, where do the candidates stand on all of this? What will they do if they’re successful? We sat down with Mark Drakeford and Vaughan Gething to find out:
